SURFACING: CHAPTER ONE (PART ONE)

CHAPTER ONE: THE FIRST TIME

He was lying on the beach, face down against the sand. The salty sea water finally took an effect on him. He couldn’t really tell what’s happening. He heard a lot of footsteps, he heard voices. He felt something waist down. Something else, something unusual. He tried to open his eyes but all he can make out is bright lights, from the sun perhaps, and figures rushing towards him. He felt a bit odd breathing, no water gushing, just light air. He came to his senses really slowly, and then he felt he’s lifted unto something, some kind of sponge for the feel of it. Soft and cushiony. He heard more voices, and then very annoying sound, something else—a whooping, alarming noise. He felt threatened; and he woke up at a jolt, he could see them now. They’re human. He’s finished, he thought. He’s half man half fish, they would do things to him, he thought. And only at that point that he realized he hadn’t got any tails any longer, but really normal feet, like the humans did.

He heard them asking him, ‘are you okay,’ but he didn’t respond. He looked at himself, covered in nothing but white towel; he stared amazingly at his new feet. He got rid of the tail and it had been replaced by a pair of feet. He looked at the skin of his new feet, it’s not green anymore, it’s the same colour of his body skin. Then he took off the towels and he saw something else, but he somehow felt ashamed and covered it back with the towel. He looked around, it’s a small room, two humans in black were sitting beside him, and they looked alarmed, but not threatening. One of them got two small circular glasses stashed in front of his eyes, he’s a male as himself, and the other one was large, male too. It was amazing, he thought.

And then he felt a jerked, and the two male brought him out of the room, or so he thought was a room. It’s a transporter, he was not at the beach, he’s somewhere else, he couldn’t make out where, they told him to lay down while they took him into the building, he could see some people wear whites, and some greens, and some other blue. All he witnessed next was beyond his knowledge or anyone of his kind. He was amazed by all the things these humans have, and what they’re capable of doing. And there’s a lot of waiting. He could understand them easily; after all, they were taught many human languages in the kingdom down-under. And then a new human came in, dress in white, long hair, a little smooth and small, big, bright eyes, and smelled fragrant. A female, he anticipated.

And then she started talking, her voice soft and lovely, definitely a female. He examined her; her features, her face, her body her legs everything, and by the look of it, he thought humans were complicated. There are a lot of things going on with them; white clothes, that pair of glasses again but not circular this time, more squarely, and then there’s something hanging on her neck that he didn’t know, she wore something on her feet, black ones, and there’s a kind of ornament on her ears and pinned on her chest a black, rectangle and some markings which to his thinking was some kind of writing. They were told human had a system of communicating without speaking, maybe this was it.

‘What’s your name?’ she asked. He stared at her, he wanted to answer, but he can’t. And for the first time he realized he couldn’t talk. His mouth tried to utter something, trying to answer her but he just couldn’t. He’s horrified, he couldn’t talk. And then he had flashes of everything that had been happening. He remembered asking help from a Snake mermaid so that he could take a form of a human. He remembered that she said something about a price to pay; something that will never allow the secrets of the Merman to get out, and now he knew. It’s his ability to talk, so that he cannot tell them anything about it, and that’s why they were only to be taught to speak, to understand people, but not to communicate with them if, and only if, the restriction of communicating with human was to be broken. He hadn’t thought of ‘the price’ of his action to that extend. It seemed like his purpose had failed.

He saw her writing something on a thin board. She examine his eyes; she pointed something that has light to his eyes that made him jerked backward a bit, and then she asked him to open his mouth and put in a stick, and scribbled something again on the board.

She asked him again, ‘What’s your name? Can you hear me?’ He nodded, with the hope that she understood the sign. She looked perplexed.

‘You can hear me, so you must understand me is that correct?’ He nodded again. He’s grateful, the sign worked for a moment he thought it’s impossible to communicate with them.

‘And you can’t talk is it correct?’ He nodded again, and now the female human seemed satisfied. He scribbled more on the board and then a male came in, with white clothes as well. They talked rapidly with some words he couldn’t understand, he heard concussion, hospitalized, and more words he couldn’t understand but he felt safe. They didn’t know what he was, what he’s supposed to be. The secret of the underwater world remained as it is, for now at least.

He was then brought to a room, and he’s supposed to sleep on a rather high spot, called bed, and was to wait there until they said he can leave. A part of him wanted to rejoice the fact that he’s at human world and none of them suspect a thing, and another part of him said to stay there longer, but he had something else to do. The female came back, more questions this time, sometimes he nodded and most of the time he shook his head. He really wanted to speak but there’s nothing can say. Even after she left, he tried once a while to make a sound from his mouth, but nothing at all came out.

And before the day’s darken, another human came in and female as it turn out to be called woman, or girl, and the white-clothes human were called doctors, and she, and the other green-dressed human were called nurses. She brought him food, served on compartmented steel. There’s vegetables he’s not familiar with, and also meat. There are a lot of things he had to endure to stay on human’s world it seemed.
